The “buddy system” is a well-known way to succeed at a task if there’s a good chance you’ll fail by “going it alone.” Having someone at your side committed to the same goal, each of you offering support and encouragement to one another, can be a powerful means to reach your objective. Also, accomplishing something together can be more rewarding than a solo effort. Rick and Vicki are a husband and wife team that chose New Life Weight Loss Surgery Center to lose weight, and pledging as buddies to motivate one another to succeed in doing so.
The ill effects of obesity were literally and figuratively weighing heavy on Rick and Vicki. Both had high blood pressure, foot problems and arthritis – Vicki’s was in her spine, left hip and leg, while Rick’s was in both knees. Overweight her entire life, Vicki had given-in to the notion that she would remain heavy forever. But as she got older the weight-induced aches and pains plagued her. Her energy level was low too, which was frustrating because she was an outgoing person. Meanwhile, Rick had become ashamed of how he looked. His clothes didn’t fit and his self esteem was low, as was his energy level. Rick’s sleep apnea didn’t help matters either.
The overweight couple had tried various methods to shed pounds over the years, including diet workshops, health clubs, and diet pills, but their efforts achieved little or nothing. They finally came to the conclusion that they had suffered long enough. After investigating weight loss surgery, they decided that if they were both approved for bariatric procedures they would commit to supporting one another to assure success. When they were approved, each chose Roux-en-Y surgery which best fit their lifestyle and eating habits. Their surgeries were performed almost one month apart. Vicki’s procedure was in early September of 2006 and Rick’s was 29 days later.
Vicki feels physically and mentally good now. What’s more, her self confidence and self esteem have grown. Best of all, she is thrilled to have reached all her goals. “I have never regretted my decision to have surgery,” she said. “I knew it was my chance to change my life. It feels good to feel good! I look forward to the happier and healthier years ahead.” Rick is doing very well also. His blood pressure is great and his sleep apnea is gone! He’s not taking pain relievers for his knees or feet either. Speaking for the two of them, Rick proclaimed, “We feel as if we’ve had a new life instilled in us.”
New Life Weight Loss Surgery Center is proud to have had the opportunity to help Rick and Vicki turn their lives around. There’s no doubt the “buddy system” worked for them. The truth is, every New Life patient has a buddy, a whole team of buddies, providing the guidance and support necessary to overcome obesity.
“This (weight loss surgery) was the best thing that I could have done for myself. I feel like I’ve been given a second chance at life.”Vicki
“I have endless energy and feel fantastic...as if I’m 25 years-old again. I love to buy new clothes with no Xs in them.”
Rick
