Success Story
LORA W.
Centerville, Ohio
Roux-en-Y Surgery Patient
(August, 2007)
Almost 185 lbs. lost after 2 years
For Lora, being overweight was physically and mentally exhausting. She was constantly out of breath and even simple physical tasks were a chore. Strangers sometimes stared or made rude comments. She sometimes avoided social events because she couldn’t participate because of her size or lack of mobility. Ashamed of how big she had become, she tried Weight Watchers, the Atkins Diet and a popular liquid diet. Although she lost a little weight each time, she gained it all back and then some. Lora became increasingly unhappy with her life, feeling powerless to change matters on her own. She finally realized that bariatric surgery was the only way she would ever attain and maintain a normal weight.
Two years after surgery, Lora has achieved her weight loss goal and her energy level is much higher than it was pre-op! She enjoys being able to shop in the “misses” department of any store. She no longer endures the scornful stares of strangers. “Hopeful and healthy” is how she describes herself, and rightly so. Her self-confidence is high, the cloud of obesity-related depression has lifted, and she is healthy: her blood sugar levels are normal now (she no longer flirts with pre-diabetes) and her sleep apnea has ceased. She confesses to thinking about food more than before, but in a healthy way. Her advice to anyone thinking about weight-loss surgery is to realize that it’s not a cure, but a powerful tool to finally lose weight.
“I am so grateful for the caring and support of everyone at New Life. I’m the one changing my eating habits and exercising, but the New Life staff helped me get my life back. How does one adequately say ‘thank you’ for that?”Lora
